Supporting the V.P. Director of Art and Design and the Associate Art Directors, the Design Assistant will also provide administrative support to the entire Design department on a wide-ranging list of fiction and nonfiction titles across these high-profile imprints including Penguin Press, Viking Books, Riverhead Books, Penguin Books, Portfolio, Sentinel, Thesis, Optimism Press, Penguin Classics, The Open Field, and Pamela Dorman Books. This position offers the opportunity for growth and to learn about the interior design process, from the manuscript stage all the way to the printed book you will eventually hold in your hands. No previous publishing experience is required.Recent titles and bestsellers include, HIS NAME IS GEORGE FLOYD (Pulitzer Prize Winner) By Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa, TRUST by Hernan Diaz (Pulitzer Prize Winner), G-MAN by Beverly Gage (Pulitzer Prize Winner), THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE: A Novel by James McBride, THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY by Matt Haig, and WILL by Will Smith.The Interior Design team’s job is to design everything on the inside of every book. This includes the binding, endpapers, and everything you see on every page. The book designer attends to every detail, from the original layouts to overseeing the typesetting of every page and element. The Assistant acts as a liaison between Editorial, Managing Editorial, Production Editorial, and Production within the publishing group.Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, loves the art of bookmaking and the physical object of the book, and enjoys reading broadly and often. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, thrives learning new systems and applications, communicates clearly, is comfortable asking for help when needed, and wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team.Applying for this role: Please have your application for consideration by September 8, 2023. Portfolio links or PDFs should be linked to your application in the ATS, and please remember to provide passwords, if applicable.The Role:• Supporting the Art Directors and Designers on projects and departmental tasks, from organizing art to laying out photo inserts and family trees.• Create email templates to route book materials to different departments for approvals and track the approvals as they happen• Send follow-up emails and reminders to maintain schedules• Attends Production meetings and takes notes during meetings to later relay to the designers on the team• Design binding mechanicals and picking binding materials• Archives the final digital files of all projects once books are printed.• Helps in the preparation of design layouts• Converting hardcover books to paperback• Researching book subject matter and related typography and images• Will work towards designing books on their ownThe Essentials:• A deeply inquisitive and creative mind and a love of typography• Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills• Ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently• Ability to work effectively with all levels of management• Strong written and verbal communication skills• Strong organizational skills• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.• Proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator and a strong interest and ability to learn new applicationsThe salary for this position is $48,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.Penguin Random House job postings include a good faith compensation range for each open position.
